AN IDEAL WORK PLATFORM
The catamaran layout provides excellent stability for instruments and computers as well as the aft bridgedeck between the hulls providing safe and easy access to the water when sampling. There is also an external hot and cold deck shower excellent for field work that requires diving or snorkeling.
Velella and the auxiliary (3.6m RIB) are available to provide a safe working platform for marine research in the Great Barrier Reef and South East Queensland, Australia. Science Under Sail holds appropriate permits for Velella to be used as a skippered charter vessel within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Great Sandy Marine Park and Moreton Bay Marine Park. Velella is a commercially registered vessel with 2C survey (as well as other survey classes). The auxiliary is also registered for commercial use and can be used as an auxiliary within 5NM of Velella (all waters at discretion of skipper) or as a standalone vessel in smooth water (any distance from Velella that the skipper considers to be a safe operating distance from shore or Velella).

Velella has previously undertaken water quality surveys in the Mackay Whitsundays region of the Great Barrier Reef as well as benthic habitat surveys in the Capricorn Bunker Group - collecting field data to validate remote sensing information.
We charter Velella and the auxiliary to research organisations (e.g. universities, CSIRO, AIMS) as a charter vessel, under the supervision of their own skipper (minimum of a coxswain required, as well as appropriate induction), or can provide full crew and catering staff if required (skipper, deckhand, cook). Science Under Sail will consider being an industry partner and providing in-kind support for some research activities – please contact James Udy to discuss this option.
Contact Science Under Sail for more information regarding charter rates and availability.
